Animal Services Program

In August 2004 NECCOG began its regional animal services program. The program currently serves six of the region’s member towns: Brooklyn, Canterbury, Killingly, Hampton, Pomfret, Sterling, Voluntown and Woodstock. Our program is available 24/7/365. We always have an ACO on duty. Calls, during regular business hours, are taken by the NECCOG switchboard and then processed to provide a timely response. Calls taken after hours and on weekends are taken by our answering service. Based on the nature of the call the ACO may be called immediately (animal hit by car) or it may be held for action (barking dog) during regular business hours.

Animal ServiceOur staffing includes a full-time animal control officer who also serves as the program director (this person has more than 25 years experience in animal control), two part-time ACO’s, and secretarial/administrative staff through NECCOG. We also utilize a number of volunteers to assist in the cleaning of kennels and exercising animals housed at our Killingly facility. We have 21 runs to house dogs and a limited number of cages to house cats. Other domestic animals (horses, cows, pigs, etc…) are dealt with in cooperation with the Connecticut Department of Agriculture.

Each animal eligible for adoption is fully evaluated by our staff and we seek the best match possible. Of note is the fact that we have not had to put any animal down due to a lack of space – all animals (with the exception of diseased or temperament issues) that can be placed with an appropriate owner are so placed. All paperwork related to animal control is handled by NECCOG – including all State reports and license renewals each spring.
