Each of NECTD buses is equipped with a bicycle rack that can hold up to two bicycles. Only single seat, two wheeled bikes are allowed to be transported on buses. Tandem, recumbent, three wheeled or motor-driven bikes are not allowed. Both wheels must fit into the bike rack wheel slots and the support arm/hook must fit over the top of the bike wheel. NECTD cannot guarantee space to transport your bicycle at any time. Bike racks are on a first come, first served basis.
On a limited and conditional basis bicycles may be allowed inside our buses. A maximum of two bikes may be allowed on board, if space allows and safety permits. The following rules apply:
- Seating for passengers will always take priority over space for bikes.
- Bikes must be properly secured in the wheelchair securement station using a minimum of two securement devices. Once secured, the bike owner should find a seat near the bike.
- The driver may assist with bike securement, and may determine whether or not the bike is secured properly.
- If a rider in a wheelchair is occupying the securement station, the bike will not be allowed on board.
- If either the wheelchair securement station or seating in the securement area is needed by a rider mid-journey, the bike will need to be removed. If there is no room to move the bike to a rack, the rider must get off the bus with his/her bike.
- Bikes will not be allowed to protrude into the aisle way.
- Bikes already secured inside the bus may remain inside even if space becomes available on the exterior bike rack.
- Muddy or greasy bikes are not permitted on the bus.
- Never step into traffic while loading or unloading a bike.
- Always walk your bicycles in transit areas and pedestrian corridors.
- Always load and unload your bicycle, standing on the curb side in front of the bus.
- Children under the age of 12 must be accompanied by an adult when loading or unloading their bicycle from the bike rack
- Single seat, two-wheeled bicycles, measuring not more than 69.5 inches long, with the handlebar measuring 29 inches, and with a wheel diameter not exceeding 28 inches will be permitted on the bike rack.
- No permits are required to use the bike rack.
- There is no additional fare to use the bike rack.
- SunLine is not responsible for bikes left on or damaged while on the bike rack
How to load and unload your Bicycle
Remember, you are responsible for loading, securing and unloading your bicycle from the bike rack. Here is how to Bike & Bus:
When loading your bike:
- As the bus pulls up, raise your hand to let the driver know that you will be using the bike rack. Stand back clear away from the curb to allow for safe bus boarding.
- Make sure the driver sees you before you step in front of the bus.
- Squeeze the handle on the top of the rack and lower the rack.
- Lift your bike and place its wheels in the trough, with the front wheel toward the spring bar.
- Raise the spring bar over the front tire and place it on the top of the tire, close to the tire, and make sure the spring bar is secure.
- If there is a bike in the front space, load your bike in the rear space, with your handlebars in the opposite direction.
- Remove any valuables from your bike.
- Board the bus and pay your fare.
When unloading your bike:
- Exit the bus through the front door and notify the driver that you are removing your bicycle.
- Lower the spring bar from the tire and lift your bicycle off the bike rack.
- After you remove your bicycle and if there are no other bicycles on the bike rack, lift the rack up until the latch “clicks” into place and is secure.
- Move your bicycle onto the curb and wait until the bus passes.
